RVT's 198.0% payout ratio is based on trailing earnings, which appear unusually depressed relative to the company's historical profitability. A single year of earnings can produce an unusually high payout ratio that may not reflect the dividend's long-term sustainability. For established dividend payers, free cash flow coverage and forward earnings estimates are often more meaningful indicators of dividend safety than a single year of trailing EPS.
